CALLED TO SERVE
God is a connectional God who invites people to work with him in his project to rescue the lost and offer them salvation. The writer of the book of Genesis states that when God created the universe and all that is in it, he spoke in plural. When he created the first human being, he said: “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26) We know that God is One, but God presents to us as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God has the power to do everything by himself, without our help, but he is inviting us all the time to work in community serving one another. God descended from heaven in the person of Jesus of Nazareth to dwell among us.
When Jesus started his ministry on earth, he called twelve volunteers to work with him. Jesus had the ability to develop his ministry by himself, but he invited many people to follow him, some of them rejected him, but others accepted the invitation. An example is found in the gospel of Luke chapter nine, when Jesus called a young man to follow him to serve others, the young man responded: “Lord, let me first go to bury my father,” but Jesus answered him, “Let the dead bury their own dead and follow me.” Other people accepted the call to serve and became his disciples. Jesus selected twelve men who left everything and walked with Jesus for three and a half years feeding, healing, and serving many people who had different physical and spiritual needs.
When Jesus was selecting his disciples, he was not looking for professionals or people with a high education or a high social standard, he was not looking for people with master’s in divinity or master’s in theology or PHD degrees. Most of the men who became his disciples were simple people like you and me. Most of them were fishermen, tax collectors, or farmers. Jesus called them and prepared them to serve others. The same way, Jesus calls us today to serve people in need in our community. On one occasion Jesus told his disciple, “For even the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life for many.” (Mark 10:45) God is still calling people today to serve others. There are many opportunities for us to serve other people using the resources and talents God has put on our hands. On one occasion Jesus sent his disciple to a mission and told them: “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” (Matthew 10:45) God has given us all many blessings that we can share them with other people. We have been called to serve, not to be served. Let us serve God and serve our community with joy. Some of us may think that we do not have the resources needed to serve others, but God has given enough blessings we can share with others. We really have more than what we need. God have given us talents, financial resources, time we can dedicate serving as volunteers in the ministries in our church and other places. Let us dedicate more time to serve God and serve our community.

Blessings, and have a Happy Saint Valentine’s Day.
