APRIL FOOLS VS. THE GOSPEL OF JESUS
By: Pastor Pablo, April 2026
Most of us have been victims of a surprise or a joke from a co-worker, a relative or a friend on April Fool’s Day. April fool is a tradition that consists in practical jokes and hoaxes done by someone on the first day of April every year. The players of the joke or hoax often expose their actions later by shouting “April fools!” at the victim. According to some historians, the tradition of April Fool’s Day dates back to 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, called by the Council of Trent in 1563. Many kinds of jokes are played in many other countries that day. There is also speculation that April Fool’s Day is linked to the first day of Spring. Some people enjoy the jokes and laugh, but others do not like to be victims or to participate in them. You should be ready because a friend, a co-worker, or a relative may be planning to surprise you this first day of April.
Now, you may ask: “Pastor Pablo, what does April Fool's Day have to do with the Gospel of Jesus?” Well, even though there are many things in life that are predictable, life also is full of surprises. Some of these surprises may affect your life drastically, other surprises may bring us joy and happiness. For this reason, we need to be prepared and to distinguish between what is real and what is foolery. One example of a surprise of the devastating effects of a pandemic known as “Coronavirus COVID-19". That virus appeared as a surprise in a town in Wuhan, China. This virus spread to many countries in a few days, killing many people. Nobody was ready to face this situation that had disturbed our daily lives. One of my sisters and her husband were killed by that strong and uncontrollable disease. This kind of surprise was not a joke to be made on “April Fool’s Day” or any day or month of the year. This was something real that took the lives of many innocent people around the world. Some people interpreted this as a punishment from God as a consequence of our sins, but I prefer not to agree or disagree on this matter. What I believe is that this is a sign of the last days and that the return of Jesus for his church is nearby.
Another example we can mention is that for many people, the gospel of Christ is foolishness, but they ignore that it is not a joke, but a matter of life and death. During a time when many people saw the gospel as a crazy idea, the Apostle Paul wrote: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” (1 Corinthians 1:18-19) The gospel of Jesus is not a joke; it is the only way for all human beings to escape from what is about to occur to this world very soon. Instead of taking this matter as a joke, I prefer to believe what is written in the Bible, in the Gospel of Matthews chapters 24 and 25. My suggestion to anyone who reads this short article is to read your Bible and do not take what you read as a joke to be made on April First. We need to take what is written in the Bible seriously because everything written in that book will be fulfilled. (Read Matthew 5:18) Have a happy April Fool’s Day, but believe in God’s word and the gospel of Christ as something real and powerful.
